Joe Beumer is a freelance lighting designer for theatre, dance, and opera. He is passionate about telling stories (no matter the art form or design field) and collaborating to create unique products through research, ingenuity, and an eye for design. Design highlights include Thumbprint – Portland Opera; Rigoletto, Cavalleria Rusticana, and The Barber of Seville – Opera Colorado; Tosca – Utah Opera; Aida – Cincinnati Opera (w/Thomas Hase); Tosca and Elixir of Love – Permian Basin Opera; Yardbird – Atlanta Opera; Indecent and Peter and the Starcatcher – Playhouse on Park; Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Great Gatsby, and Dracula: Bloodlines (World Premiere) with Dayton Ballet; Cinderella, The Importance of Being Earnest, Mamma Mia, Bonnie & Clyde, Pippin, The 39 Steps, Sylvia, West Side Story, Chicago, The Drowsy Chaperone, Raisin in the Sun, and Clybourne Park – Summer Rep Theatre (Sonoma, CA); What We Wanted (with Paul Miller) – Clurman Theatre at Theatre Row; The Gold – NYMF at the Pearl Theatre; Mary Poppins (w/Thomas Hase) – Syracuse Stage; La Bohéme – Crested Butte Music Festival, and Considering Matthew Shepard – Cincinnati Opera & Vocal Arts Ensemble. He recently lit the current tour of The Book of Mormon for original designer Brian MacDevitt and was the Associate Designer for the World Premiere of Days of Wine and Roses at the Atlantic Theatre. Additional Associate/Assistant work includes National Opera of Bordeaux, The Public Theatre (NYC), Lyric Opera of Chicago, Michigan Opera Theatre, Opéra de Montréal, Geva Theater, and Houston Grand Opera among others.
